Phillip Morrison

Last weekend while camping in Doolin (a small town on the West Coast of Ireland) I came across the gallery of painter Phillip Morrison. I instantly fell in love with his paintings I just love how they are so full of energy and fun; I really like his use of bright colours and his use of strong lines.

Phillip grew up in Twyne in North Wales and before pursue his carrer in art he worked as a police officer for 6 years. When he decided that that was not for him he decided to go and studied in St Martins College of Art in London and from there his tallent grew.

David Hicks Hexagonal Wallpaper

This wallpaper was first designed in the 1960s by David Hicks. It is available once again through wallpaper manufacturer Cole and Son. David Hicks was a very influential English interior designer who was born in the 1920's. I think this geometric print is brilliant, I particularly like the pink colourway it reminds me of some of the interior designer Kelly Wrestlers work.

Interesting Fact 
The other day I was watching Toy Story when I noticed that the carpet in the scary toy torturing next door neighbours house was the Hix Hexagonal Print the wallpaper is also very similar check it out.  

Then I was informed that the carpet is also the same as the carpet in the Hotel in the movie the Shining. See the image below.

PiP Studio

On a recent trip to Avoca Handweavers ( a clothing manufacturing and retail business in Ireland) I came across a great range of porcelain. Later while looking through a Brian Yates wallpaper book I came across wallpaper with the very same design and decided to do a bit of investigating. I found out that yes the porcelain and the wallpaper where designed by the same person PiP. 

PIP who's real name is Catherine was born in a small village by the sea in Holland. She has a love of birds in particular a small African parrot from the genus Agapornis which is present in many of the designs. Her studio started in her attic in Amsterdam and has grown from there.  She does porcelain, stationary, bedding, wallpaper, bags and textiles. Her motto is ‘Happy products for Happy people’

Taschen Books

While in London I came across this amazing book shop in Sloane square. I later found out they have shops all over the world but they have yet to reach us here in Ireland, lucky for us we can buy from there website www.taschen.com. They have amazing books especially for the design conscious. They have books on art, architecture, design, film, fashion, photography, pop culture and lots more. It's a haven for coffee table book lovers . A popular one seems to be their City Guides, that give you information on Hotels, Restaurants and Shops.

Jens Risom

Jens Risom is a Danish born American designer whos works have been a landmark in the furniture design industry. At the age of 94 for he is now seeing a revival of his work, he is collaberating with Rocket Gallery and Benchmark Furniture to re-issue nine of his 1950's and 60's designs. His designs are simple and functional with block colours, they are very retro perfect for that 60's vibe. The exhibition runs from July 2nd to September 4th at the Rocket Gallery in Shoreditch in London.

Vegetal Chair

The Vegetal Chair was designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, in 2008 and is now made in Germany by Vitra.
I used this chair in a recent design scheme. The concept for my design was "A Tree" and this interesting chair design with it's organic and branch like forms was ideal to fit in with my concept. The chair is available in six colours is stack able and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Gilbert and Wright

I recently went for a few drinks in the new pub in Dun Laoghaire called Gilbert and Wright and I was blown away with the interior. It has a 70's retro vibe that is very nostalgic. I felt as if I was sitting in someone’s grandparent’s front room with the old miss matching armchairs, huge lampshades, old vinyl records and heavy velour curtains. I just love how they have put everything together, it is a feast for the eyes. The Basel Chair

The Basel Chair was designed by Jasper Morrison a London born furniture and product designer. He designed the Basel chair for Vitra. The chair is made of beach wood with a plastic seat and back, it comes in a range of colours and is so versatile. Jasper Morrison has rejuvenated a classic modern chair and made it his own. I first notice this chair in the restaurant in the IFI cinema in Temple Bar in Dublin, they have a mixed of colours, I love the simplicity of the chair with it's block forms
